This is not a suggestion, this is a discussion.
In Wolfman's Wonderful World of Weapons thread, Rhadiem suggest APCs as an edition to the game (post 41 top of 3rd page for those interested). Becuase this is a vehicle not included in Dust, thought I would make a thread on it to discuss if these would fit in the game.
We already have drop ships, LAVs have a passenger spot, we got drop uplinks to get people behind enemy lines, aren't we mobile enough? Well, apparently in the final build, the maps will be much, much larger (CCP said the old beta map in the '11 Keynote was a small map). So moving from A to B along much bigger maps can be a hassle, drop ships tend to be shot down (or rammed into ground/buildings/other dropships) and LAVs have no tank what so ever. So maybe the APC would make for a good heavily armored transport vehicle.
My thought on APCs, if ever added to the game, would be defences similar to a HAV, but only 1-2 small turrets as its defence. After all it can't be just a HAV with passenger slots, that might be overpowered . Maybe cram a mCRU in it. 4 or so passenger slots plus driver and 1-2 gunners. Somewhere in between HAV and LAV in speed. For looks I'm thinking of the Russian BTR 80 or the or the US AAVP-7 (because they look the coolest IMO.)
Whats your thoughts on a Dust APC and do you think it will fit in the game?
EDIT: It was pointed out I had a negative spin on Dropships. They are a viable means of transport and great at fast movement but tend to die faster when shot then a well armored APC would. |

I'd didn't say dropships are bad transport, they just not the beefiest thing in the world. Great at fast transport but tend to fold quickly under direct fire if not very careful.
I'll see about making that clearer.

Very good idea. A lot of real life APCs do have a medium style weapon. Larger than say a 50 Cal. but not a full on tank turret. The Russian BTRs and old US Bradleys had them.
And here I am comparing IRL to an Internet Space Mercenary Game. |

Klivve Cussler wrote:I've been thinking on the topic of tactical troop movement and I think that traditional uses of troop transport (be it dropship or APC) needs to be rethought for Dust, basically because of deployable CRUs.
Let's assume that the maps are bigger (because right now they're small enough that you can run to the fight), and you're pushing on your first objective. Once you achieve your objective, troop transport becomes useless, as you can spawn at your objective. It's only during the formup for a push that they have a strategic value.
So, again, we're getting ready to push on an objective. LAVs deploy scouts to nearby hills to ensure a clear LZ. Dropships move in, deploying troops. An FOB is built, with troops deploying emplacements, supply posts, and CRUs. HAVs are called in or moved up. Then the troops assault the objective. Dead troops respawn at the FOB and the attack continues until the either the objective or the FOB is taken. Then the process starts again.
On rethinking troop movement. I agree.
"Only useful during form up" that's the point isn't it? Bring troops safely to point, jump out, shoot, jump in, move to next objective. Its more for moving troops between spawn and hostile objectives than a hold the line machine.
Also, what if the skies are packed with air superiority fighters (they were in alpha) or what have you, a drop ship is not always the best solution. This is CCP we're talking about, for all we know they'll ninja-add weather in game which could do all manner of mischief against drop ships (and other vehicles). Some planets may not allow drop ships (storm) while some may be hard for tanks (ocean). Who really knows besides CCP? Sometimes an APC just works better.
Someone said that 8 slots might be more fitting than my thought of 4, which would make APC more of a heavy hauler/mobile base while the drop ship for lighter movement (4 passengers) but more tactical is placement. |
